Is a Basset Hound the right dog for you and your family?
Before making the decision to purchase or adopt a Basset, you will want to ask yourself the following questions:
~If you are used to dogs that are very hyper or dog that are very active, will you be happy with an even tempered and calm Basset Hound? At the same time Bassets have little bursts of energy. Basset Hounds are best suited for laid back lifestyles, but Basset Hounds are by no means lazy, do you understand that a Basset Hounds has the same needs and desires that any other dog breed wants? Especially a puppy.
~Bassets do not make good running, jogging, and hiking buddies. Yes they love car rides and can tolerate low trail hikes. Bassets will play catch or fetch if they are in the "mood" and are less likely to listen to your every command. Will the Basset Hound really fit into your lifestyle?
~Because Bassets have long ears and are low and heavy set, they have special needs. Because of their long ears, Bassets will dribble water all around your house with their ears after they get a drink, is this something that you will be understanding of? I have to mop my kitchen twice a day because of the water and dirt that gets dragged through their ears and paws. Not to mention that Bassets will usually drag their wet ears through the dirt and grass after drinking. If the bottom of their ears are not wiped daily, their ears will grime up causing it to stick to the hair. Will you be okay with cleaning your Basset's ears everyday or wiping their ears off after every drink of water? Basset Hounds are also prone to ear infections...over cleaning a Basset's ears can be harmful but do you know that you will most likely need to clean a Basset's ears every 3 weeks if there is build up?
~Because Basset Hounds possess a hunting instinct, they tend to roam and should be kept in a secured fenced yard. Is this something that you can provide? Do you understand that Bassets are so instinctual, that they should not be left with small animals and birds alone?
~A single Basset does not do well left alone for long periods of time and will howl and cry. Will you have the time to give your Basset lots of attention and love? Would you be willing to get another Basset or another dog with a similar personality to keep your Basset company when you are away at a later time so that your Basset doesn't stay lonely?
~Even though Basset Hounds are friendly, it is said that Basset Hounds make poor guard dogs...however, I think this isn't true. I have seen that Bassets are very protective of their property with large barks, and they will always alert you when someone is at your door. Is this acceptable to you?
~ Do you know that Basset Hounds are huge shedders? It is said that red and white Bassets don't shed as much as tri-colored Bassets do but this may be because it's not so noticeable. Do you understand that you will always have some type of hair on you?
~Did you know that Basset Hounds are NOT a hypo allergenic dog, and young kids who don't even have allergies can develop allergies to Basset Hounds?
~Did you know that Bassets themselves can have allergies? While most allergies will go away with the right supplement, some allergies require constant medical attention. Is this something that you would be okay with living with? Or would you be willing to change your life around to accommodate your Basset, even if it means removing grass from your yard or changing the dog food that you have feeding for 10 years to something new?
If you have answered positively to all these questions then a Basset Hound is the Dog for you! Now you just have to find the right Basset Hound Breeder and most importantly, the right Basset for you!
